STEFAN GATZEV, paintings and drawings – 22.04.-03.05.2025

90th anniversary of the birth of STEFAN GATZEV

exhibition of paintings and drawings

from 22 April to 3 May 2025

The present exhibition in Arte Gallery is accompanying the large representative exhibition “I, the Artist” in the State Gallery of Fine Arts /from 15.04. to 25.05./ on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of Stefan Gatsev / 1935-1986/. In the space of Arte we show a small part of the diverse and multifaceted work of this exceptional painter, known mainly to art historians, connoisseurs and collectors. In addition to marking the anniversary of the artist’s birth, the exhibition continues Arte’s theme of “Steps in Time – Generations”, as just a few months ago we presented an exhibition of another great artist, Ilia Petrov – Stefan Gatsev’s teacher. The works in the exhibition at Arte are chamber paintings, mainly covering the period of the 1960s and 1970s, and including drawings and paintings. The exhibition not only adds to the overall perception of Stefan Gatsev as an artist, but also reveals what an incredible painter he is. As prof. Ivan Marazov has said: “He does not choose objects, but draws everything that surrounds him at the moment. The cycles of felt-tip pen drawings from his travels in Bulgaria, Slovakia, Italy show how quickly he grasps the specificity of the landscape. And at the same time, he transformed the sketch into a complete work… Rarely will one meet a contemporary artist who treats his work with the seriousness and responsibility of a Renaissance painter… He perceived his talent as a destiny, as a duty that he had to redeem throughout his life and through his life.”/2022/
